Teaching food in ESL class
Group food cards by fruit, vegetables, drinks, snacks, or meals. Sorting creates repetition without turning the lesson into a word list.
Food is a natural context for countable and uncountable nouns: an apple, two eggs, some rice, and some milk. Stronger classes can practise requests and simple shopping dialogues.
Useful classroom language
- Do you like bananas? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
- What do you have for breakfast?
- Can I have some juice, please?
- How many apples are there?
